The possible explanations as to why milk could have provided strong favorable selection for lactase persistence include; Milk may have been a critical food source during the times of famine. Milk was safer to drink than water and reduced exposure to pathogen. Also milk is a protein and fat-rich and thus could have been an important, high quality source of food.
