An example of product placement is when tom hanks is shown stranded on an island with a FedEx box in the movie Cast Away.
Probably FedEx paid the movie producers to be there, so that they could advertise their company in the movie. The more people see the movie, the more of them will see the FedEx logo, and be reminded of the existence of that company, and they will be more eager to use it.
