12 is the answer because it is the area of a a square plus the are of 2 triangles. Are of the square is 9, because you square 3. And the area of one triangle is 1.5, so the area of 2 such triangles is 3. You add them both, which gives you 12. (9+3=12). Hope this helped!!!!
