The longitude and latitude on a map are measured in angular units called degrees, minutes and seconds. One degree is equal to 60 minutes and 1 minute is equal to 60 seconds.

As one moves towards the poles from the equator the east-west distance between lines decreases. Line of longitudeare measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian. This is easiest to understand when looking down on the Earth at the North Pole.
