The performance of Jesse Owens and other black athletes in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin may have challenged Adolf Hitler’s notions of racial supremacy, but the Olympics overall were a “great propaganda boost” for Nazi Germany, University of Illinois history professor Peter Fritzsche said.
