Enzymes affect chemical reactions in living organisms by helping speed up reactions without itself being consumed within the reaction. It does this by essentially lowering the activation energy needed for a certain reaction to occur. The lowering of activation energy is simplify reducing the amount of energy needed for a reaction to begin by orienting chemical substances in more appropriate positions so that bonds can break and form more easily to form new substances etc.
