How can you increase the magnitude of friction between two surfaces?

-- Make one or both surfaces rougher (less smooth).
   Like cover it with sandpaper.

-- If it's one object resting on top of a surface or another object,
   then make the upper object heavier.  Like put a brick on top of it.
